Get Your Genres Right: Fix Genre Tags in Your DJ Library

Step 4 of 8Updated 4 min read

Genre is the filter you will use most when you build a set, so it is the tag worth getting right. SetFlow matches each Genre tag to its own list of genres; anything it can’t match goes under Uncategorised.

Why a genre shows fewer tracks than you have

There are two reasons, and it's worth checking them in this order.

Your other filters are on. The number beside each genre on Create only counts tracks that also pass your other filters: Collection, Era, Added and Minimum rating. Clear them, or pick All tracks, to see the full count.

The genre tag didn't match. SetFlow matches each track's Genre tag to its own list of genres. A tag it can't match goes under Uncategorised, which you can still pick on Create, but it won't count towards the genre you meant.

How SetFlow reads a genre tag

  • Hyphens and spaces are the same. Tech-House and Tech House are one genre.
  • In a list, the first genre wins. Afro House, Deep House counts as Afro House.
  • The style a tag ends on wins. Deep Afro House counts as Afro House.

So the safest tag is one main genre. Extra styles belong in Comments (see step 2).

Fix genres in Library Health

  1. Open Health. If genres need work, one of its jobs reads “Give N tracks a proper genre”.
  2. Press Fix N genres. SetFlow suggests a genre from its list for each track.
  3. Check the suggestions and untick any you don't want. Nothing is saved until you apply them.
Library Health's first job: give 1,185 tracks a proper genre, with a Fix genres button
The genre job, with examples of the tracks it will fix.

Fix runs are included on the free trial (2 a month), Hobby (3) and Pro (10), shared with Fix artists. Applying the fixes doesn't use a run.

You can also set a genre by hand in your Library, on one track or on many at once. More in fixing genres and artists.

Kept

Genres you set in SetFlow, by hand or with Fix genres, are kept when you re-import. If you change that track's genre in your DJ software afterwards, the newer change wins.

Questions

Why does a genre on Create show fewer tracks than my library?

Two reasons. The number beside each genre only counts tracks that also pass your other Create filters (collection, era, added and minimum rating), so clear those to see the full count. And a Genre tag SetFlow cannot match to its genre list goes under Uncategorised instead.

Does fixing genres in SetFlow change my DJ software?

No. SetFlow never writes to your DJ software or your music files. The genres you set in SetFlow are kept when you re-import, unless you change that track’s genre in your DJ software afterwards: then the newer change wins.
